The Most Common Reason for Dropped Ranking

A duplicate website is a website that has many if not all of the same pages as another live website. Duplication is the most common reason for dropping the ranking of websites.

The major search engines are constantly trying to improve the quality of their search engine results in an effort to provide the best quality content for users. When duplicate content is indexed by search engine spiders, valuable time and processing power is wasted. As a result, search engines have blocked sites that used duplicate content from their database, ultimately favouring the site that either had the content first, or I believe, the one site that has the greater online history.

In addition, the major search engines have a bad taste after dealing with so much duplicate content created by spammers over the past several years. As a result, posting a duplicate website is an offense that can quite literally blacklist a domain; there are few things the search engine properties dislike more than being gamed by spammers.

Deleting the site is the only option unless you want to create an entire new website with unique content and a unique purpose. That said, by deleting the website you can still ensure the effort you put into promoting the old site does not go to waste by pointing the domain to your new website's domain using a 301 redirect. A 301 is a term used to describe a server protocol which Google and other search engines will 'see' when they visit the old site. The protocol essentially says that your content from the old site can be found on the new site and that this is a permanent forwarding of all traffic. 301 redirects are by far the best way to minimize your losses from shutting down a website that just might have traffic or inbound links.

It is very important that you keep the website that has the most backlinks and has been online the longest. Switching a website to a new domain is a dangerous step. This is because of Google's famed 'sandbox'. The 'sandbox' is really only an overused turn of phrase that represents a portion of the Google algorithm which considers the age of the domain as a signifier of trust. Generally, new websites will require 6 months to a year before substantial rankings are evident; this is kind of a right of passage that Google appears to be enforcing on the average website. Sites that are obviously popular and quickly gain a load of legitimate link popularity will easily avoid the sandbox (because Google can not afford to miss a 'great' website) but this is not the common scenario.

How to avoid Duplicacy:
In most cases the amount of duplicate content used within a template in a content management system (CMS) is negligible. If, however, you have a large number of pages created using a page where 90% of the text is duplicated and only 10% is unique you do have a reason to make some changes. In my opinion it is crucial that every page within a website be composed mostly of unique content with the exception of catalogues and shopping carts where text simply has to be reused over and over.

Some Top Tips from the Best SEO's...

Keywords
Know what you want to be found for. You should know the top two or three terms that are most important to your Web site and have incorporated them into a 25-word description that doesn't use marketing hype, which can then be submitted to human powered directories.
You should also know a list of the top 10 to 100 terms you'd like to be found for and ensure that you have pages within your Web site with good, solid content for these terms to please the crawlers.
Don't make the mistake of picking the wrong keywords. Nothing is more disappointing than taking the time to achieve top rankings and then seeing no increase in traffic from all your efforts.
Also, don't pick keywords that are too popular or broad like "games" or "entertainment." You'll not only get visitors that are far less likely to buy your product, but the amount of work needed to gain that ranking will not be worth the trouble.
Research your search phrases. If you can, also check your referrer logs or other traffic tracking program to help you. If you don't have referrer logs, install a traffic tracking program such as Web Trends Live on your site and let it gather stats for you for a couple of months before you decide on your search phrases.
Check your rankings for the search phrases that you researched from WordTracker, or other search phrase research tools, as well as those from your traffic tracking program or referrer logs. I suggest this because you may find that you are already doing fairly well with some phrases and you may not want to mess with those.
Build focused pages around "real world" queries. Use phrases exactly how they are typed into a search engine, such as "How can I" and "Where can I." You will notice that sites with FAQ pages like this can end up garnering an awful lot of top placements and traffic.
Searching for the key phrase in Yahoo and noting the Yahoo Categories returned can suggest key themes and words useful to the site for optimization as well as showing the quantity and quality of the competition.
I like to thoroughly explore all possibilities when researching keyword phrases. I like to think of keyword phrases as "fuel" for specific topics. After much study using a resource like WordTracker (one of my favourite tools), I like to identify several "high performance" keyword phrases.
Learn to develop topical content with a unique spin on it, always keeping the visitors in mind. Focus should not just be on how to get tons of general traffic to a page.
Use page optimization strategies to create useful pages with content that is "in demand" by a target audience. When you start thinking this way, it has a wonderful compound effect on making actual sales or achieving your site objectives.
Isn't this why you started a Web site in the first place? Check log files for user country location and most often used keywords in search engine search.
This may demonstrate the need to offer the site in another language (or to provide a link to Alta Vista's Babelfish or the Lycos equivalent) if there are a lot of hits from another country.
Knowing the keywords used to arrive at the site helps to decide on variations and changes to the site theme.
Did you know that the KEI Factor used in WordTracker is an excellent guideline to follow? According to WordTracker, an excellent keyword phrase has a KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) of 400+.
Are you having trouble finding appropriate phrases with high KEI factors? Try using one single word (appropriate for your site) in the "comprehensive search" feature.
I very often extract excellent phrases with a KEI level well into the thousands or even into the hundreds of thousands. Always ensure that the search phrases you select are solidly related to site content.
Link Popularity
Submit to link popularity-based engines LAST after you have had a chance to build your inbound and outbound links up. Examine your internal link structure carefully.
Even for large Web sites, to the extent that it is possible, you want every Web page linking to every other page. Complex linking structures will work to your disadvantage.
Build links. Search for the top terms you want to be found for. Review the sites that come up. Visit those sites and ask the non-competitive ones if they'll swap links with you.
These sites are important because the search engines themselves are telling you they are important, by ranking them highly. That means links from them can help you in link analysis systems. It also means that if these sites get visitors, you may get visitors who follow links out of them.
Develop your inbound link popularity the old fashioned way, one link at a time. An investment of just 10 minutes per day to this with a personalized e-mail to Web site owners of similar and significant sites will produce immediate results. And you will never have to worry about the risk associated with link popularity programs.
Online Marketing
Generate lots of fresh, useful content. Keep your blatant marketing activities on economy drive (pardon the pun), be subtle about your promotion. People will notice, and will favor, less dumb hysteria, more openness, and honesty.
Admit to mistakes if you make them (as you're bound to), but don't cringe and don't give the impression of reacting self-assertive or self-deprecating for the heck of it.
If you can, issue a newsletter of your own. Never mind if you only have yourself, your wife and your stepmother for subscribers - put it on site and submit it to the engines. They simply adore that sort of all-text stuff!

Link Popularity Algorithms

When a user queries a search engine with a keyword, he expects more than just relevant results. For example if someone searches for 'Bali vacations' he would be disappointed to get a page of a personal blog with a story about John Doe's awesome Bali vacation last summer. Obviously, what the user was looking for was a travel agent like Expedia. Thus it is critical that users get not just relevant but also authoritative results. And the more pages appear daily in the Internet the bigger is a shift from the relevance to the authoritativeness in search algorithms.

Nowadays the relevance of a page is defined differently. It is not just about the keyword saturation, or copy structure. Currently the context where the page exists defines its relevance. The context is a set of pages linking to or linked by the given page. If these pages are about Bali vacations, then it is naturally to expect a page linked by them to be about Bali vacations as well. The page content would be used to adjust the algorithm's results in cases when links point to an irrelevant page, for example a widely used free web statistics system.

Link Populairty Ranking Algorithms

So how come the page content analysis is no longer enough to get relevant search results? There is a problem of abundance: the number of pages considered to be relevant basing on the page content analysis is too big for a human to digest. And this is where searching for authoritative pages helps to narrow down the results. But authority is even a vaguer notion than relevance. Authority has to express the importance and the weight of a web document. The nature of the Web as an interlinked hypertext environment suggests that links can be used to measure the degree of 'public recognition' of web pages.

This idea has been existing since the creation of the Internet, and Jon Kleinberg was one of the first to create a workable approach, which he described in his seminal work 'Authoritative Sources in a Hyperlinked Environment' (1998). He suggested that web pages can be either 'hubs' or 'authorities'. Authority is a page that has many incoming links or high in-degree. Authorities returned as relevant to some query should demonstrate an overlap in pages pointing to them. Those pages containing links to the relevant resources are called hubs. Hubs determine the relevance of authorities on a given topic and allow discarding other non-relevant pages with high in-degree.

How to Get Inbound Links to Your Website

One of the oldest and best ways to increase your search engine rankings and get visitors to your website is from inbound links. The importance of inbound links to your website will most likely never diminish. It's no secret that search engines, especially Google, value quality inbound links to a website for higher rankings. However, these days the emphasis is not on the quantity of links, instead it is on quality. A couple dozen links to your site from related, high quality, authority sites are much more valuable to a search engine than hundreds of low quality links you obtained by exchanging with anyone that would say yes.

Before I tell you how to get quality inbound links to your website, I feel I should mention something you should definitely NOT do to obtain inbound links. Never participate in an automated link exchange program. These programs are useless. They don't benefit you because you will be automatically exchanging with all sorts of low quality and unrelated sites. The search engines may even penalize your site for links obtained this way. Even manual link exchanges do not carry nearly as much weight as they once did.

However, manual link exchanges are not totally dead so if you do decide to do some "old fashioned" link exchanges, be sure you don't exchange with sites where your link will be placed on a page with hundreds of other links and make sure the page your link is on is linked from their home page. Again it's important to remember you only want to exchange with quality sites related to yours.

Now I will talk about my number one strategy for getting inbound links. And that strategy is... (drum roll please)... To write and submit articles related to your website niche. Be sure to have a resource box at the end of each article. Your resource box should mention a little about your expertise on the subject and have link to your website. If you write good, informative articles then other people will want to repost them on their websites. This will give you an inbound link for the search engines and also a link for human visitors to follow. It's a win/win situation. And for the most part only people who have websites in your niche will repost your articles, so the inbound links you are getting are also relevant. Article marketing is nothing new or revolutionary but it does work and works very well.

Now here are some tips for increasing your inbound links by writing and distributing articles...

* Be sure to write original articles. If you purchase private label rights to articles, rewrite them to make them unique before submitting.

* If you are having a hard time getting started on an article all you have to do is search article directories for other articles on your topic. Find a few that you like and use ideas from them to write a new article in your own words. Remember, you can't just copy another article. That is copyright violation. And it won't be unique anyway so it won't do much for you.

* If you are good at writing with a little humor then you might want to use that skill when writing articles. Humor is very powerful and can attract a lot of readers.

* Once you have a completely original article written, find a few quality websites in your niche and offer them your article for free with your resource box attached. You are not asking for a link exchange, you are simply giving away your informative article for free to selected sites.

* After you have a few good articles on a topic you should compile them into an ebook. Place a short author bio at the end of the ebook with a link to your website and allow other site owners in your niche to give it away free to their visitors. They can give it away as a "thank you" for signing up for their newsletter, as a gift for visiting their site, as a free bonus for purchasing their product or any other way they want to give it away. Once your ebook gets into a few people's hands it will be passed around more and more, thus giving you inbound links and a boost of traffic to your site.

* Submit your articles to a few of the top article directories. When doing this you aren't so much doing it for the inbound link from the directory itself. Of course, that link doesn't hurt but the main reason for submitting to these directories is to get your article in front of other website owners who will republish it on their sites. Two of the top directories to submit your articles to are http://ezinearticles.com and http://goarticles.com

* Publish links to your articles in digg (http://digg.com) and other community based popularity sites. A well "dugg" article can generate thousands of visitors to your website as well as inbound links.

* Network and build good relationships with maybe 10-20 quality site owners in your niche. The higher their site is ranked, the better. Help each other with site promotion, content ideas and article exchanges. Not only will this build relevant and quality inbound links to your website, it will also get you some good friends and JV partners who will prove to be very valuable to your business as time goes on.

Overall there are many benefits of writing and submitting articles. You get inbound links which help with your search engine rankings among other things. Articles also help to establish you as an expert in your niche, bring you targeted traffic and provide you with free advertising. A little time spent each day writing and distributing articles can do incredible things for your website and business.
